Drop-in sessions for consultation on community care in Craven

People are being reminded to come along to one of the last drop-in sessions about community health services in Craven, including the future of Castleberg Hospital. A number of sessions have already taken place and the next session will take place on Monday.

The three-month consultation, launched by NHS Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) in November 2017, includes community services for adults who need rehabilitation or additional support to prevent them becoming acutely unwell or care when they are nearing the end of their lives.

The next drop in sessions will run on Monday 29 January, 2-4pm at Victoria Hall, Kirkgate, Settle, BD24 9DZ.

Two further sessions in February will take place on:

  • Tuesday 6 February, 10am – noon at the Town Hall, High Street, Skipton BD23 1AH
  • Thursday 22 February, 6- 8pm at the Gargrave Village Hall, West Street, Gargrave BD23 3RD

Dr James Thomas, clinical chair at Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven CCG said: “I would very much encourage people to come along to a drop-in session to give their views. What you say will make a difference to the way community services in Craven work in the future.

“It’s important to know what matters to local people so we can design services and make decisions that personalise care and support patients and their families in the long-term.

“As a local GP, I understand how important community care is to people in Craven - especially being a rural community. If you can’t come along to one of the drop-in sessions, I would urge you to take the time to either fill out the online survey, email or write to us so that your views are counted.”

The formal consultation follows a period of engagement held in summer 2017. Local people were asked to share their thoughts on the best way to consult, and their thoughts around what matters most to them. Nearly 300 people gave their views during the engagement which was used to plan the main consultation and shape the two options being consulted on.

 Option 1: continue to provide inpatient care in the community and repair and restore Castleberg Hospital.

 Option 2: provide an enhanced range of care in people’s homes or in an alternative community setting (determined by their needs), and close Castleberg Hospital.

Castleberg Hospital was temporarily closed in April 2017 due to safety concerns following ongoing issues with the power supply, heating and drainage at the ten-bed Giggleswick site.

Since then, additional community services (including inpatient beds in local care homes) have been provided to ensure the local community’s health and care needs have been met. These also include services at the main acute hospitals in Steeton and Lancaster. Castleberg’s nursing team has also extended its role as part of the community by providing additional support to patients in their own homes.

The consultation will run until 27 February 2018. It is expected that a final decision on the future of the services will be made in May 2018.
